GODS AND GODDESSES OF ANCIENT EGYPT
by Karen Charboneau-Harrison
For thousands of years and through many Dynastic influences, Egypt was the dominant cultural and religious influence in the Middle East. Our imaginations and hearts are still stirred by the images and wisdom that were developed in Egypt. Here is a listing of the most popular Egyptian Gods and Goddesses. The names that we know them by here in the West are primarily the Greek versions of the original Egyptian names.
HAPPY OSTARA
Ostara (also known as Eostre, a Teutonic Earth Goddess) is the beginning of the agricultural year. It is time for the Earth to "spring" into action and for us to initiate and celebrate new beginnings. One of the most universal symbols of this sabbat is the planting of seeds and the sprouting of new life from the womb of the Earth Mother. The Vernal or Spring Equinox marks the beginning of the 'light' half of the year, when day gradually becomes longer than night. From now until Autumn, the power of the Goddess dominates our festivities bringing light, warmth and fertility to the earth. The courtship of the God and Goddess commences with this sabbat and this is an appropriate time to focus on the balance of male and female energies within ourselves. Her email address is ijnorthstar@fastmail.fm We begin the month of March in the sign of Pisces - purification, sacrifice and the desire to connect with the mystical are aspects of the Piscean nature. Wednesday March 1st brings us the season of Lent, which comes from an Angelo-Saxon word, Lencten, meaning, “the days lengthen.” Lent developed from the Pagan tradition of mourning for 40 days over the death of Tammuz, the son/husband of the Babylonian Goddess, Ishtar. Forty is a magical number that recurs throughout the Bible and is associated with the time it takes to break a habit and /or establish a new routine. With the Sun joined with the “Awakener,” Uranus, it will be obvious what needs to be sacrificed or purified. Mercury has slowed to a crawl turning retrograde in Pisces on the 2nd where he will remain until March 25th. This can be a particularly challenging retrograde for some of us as Mercury in the sign of Pisces is most supportive of transcendental matters… music, poetry, meditation, etc. rather than pragmatics. Retrograde Mercury in Pisces can confuse new starts, so working on projects that you’ve begun at an earlier time can benefit from Piscean intuition and creativity. On Saturday March 4th Jupiter in Scorpio turns retrograde further emphasizing projects initiated earlier, while Mercury’s challenging aspect to Pluto excels in detailed and depth analysis as well as “Freudian slips.” On Sunday, Venus the planet of love and money moves into the non-conformist and social sign of Aquarius.

by Karen Charboneau-Harrison
When we want to make changes and new beginnings in our lives we often must first make room for the new changes by releasing old habits, people or ways in which we currently use our energies which are no longer working for us. This can be in any area of your life, so before doing this ritual, first begin by looking at the person, job or lifestyle that you feel is hampering your efforts. Decide what you need to release to allow change and new thoughts & attitudes to have room to root and grow in your life. Next determine where you want to grow or change: spiritually, monetarily, emotionally, physically or intellectually. Once you know where you need to let go and what you wish to change about your life, you will be ready to do the ritual. Go here to read this article in its entirety... |
