THE ATHAME
One of the most personal and perhaps most misunderstood of the Four Tools of Magick, the Athame represents the element Fire, transformation and the direction of South. It is the symbol of the magickal Will and life force. It is used to cut through and direct energy, never for actual physical cutting. Most Witches will have a second knife known as the White Handled Knife or Bolline for use in cutting herbs or carving symbols. Most often, the Athame is made from metal, but I have seen obsidian Athames as well. It is most traditional to have a double sided blade although I have seen single sided blades used occasionally. The Athame is used to draw the Magickal Circle wherein ritual and ceremony is performed, creating a space between the worlds where all energy is balanced and concentrated for the rite. EGYPTIAN TOOLS OF MAGICK In a previous article, we explored the use of amulets and talismans in Egyptian magick. In the earliest magicks, these would have been prepared by an Egyptian priest or priestess, but as time went on, individuals schooled in magickal technique in the House of Life (Per Anhk) would be commissioned to make a specific amulet or talisman for a client. Eventually over time, the creation of an amulet or talisman became so common place that people from all walks of life would make their own. The tools that we’ll focus on for this article are all tools used primarily by the Pharaohs and Priesthood:
The ADZ was a tool used in the Opening of the Mouth ceremony by the priesthood at the mummification.

by Karen Charboneau-Harrison
SUMMER SOLSTICE (Midsummer, Litha) is the longest day of the year. It is a time to celebrate vitality, creativity, vigor, health and abundance. All over the world, people gather to honor and acknowledge this time of Light and Energy and to connect with this Solar tide of abundance, health and the beginnings of the fruits of their labors. One of the customs associated with the Summer Solstice is the blessing of animals: pets, familiars, work animals and animals which will be slaughtered in the Fall for Winter food. The blessing focuses on the animals’ health, growth, vitality and fertility. You may want to bless and charge with energy your pets or familiar to strengthen your bond with them at the Summer Solstice.
Now is also the time when the herbs, both wild and cultivated, are reaching their greatest potency. You will want to gather them before they begin to seed, so that you may dry them to use in your rituals and in the medicines that you begin to make in late summer and early Fall. Collect herbs for which you will use flowers and leaves as the Moon waxes (gets larger); roots are gathered during the Waning Moon. As you gather them, thank each one and cut it cleanly a few inches above the ground for the herbs with which you will use the flowers and leaves.

by Anna Franklin
Common terms for getting married are "Tying the knot," "getting hitched" or "joining hands." They originate in the old handfasting custom of tying a couple’s hands together to indicate that they are bound in wedlock. As a Wiccan high priestess, I have conducted many handfastings, or Pagan marriages, and in recent years an increasing number of couples have written to me for advice, asking how they can go about conducting their own ceremonies, asking for rituals, spells and themes, or just ideas on how to include non-Pagan relatives in the celebrations. I have written this book for all those lovers out there who want to make their handfasting a very special occasion. Go here to read this article in its entirety...
