THE CHALICE
by Karen Charboneau-Harrison

The fourth of the Major Tools of Magick is the Chalice, symbolic of the creative womb of the Goddess, the regenerative Cauldron of Cerridwen and the Holy Grail of Avalon. The Chalice represents the life-giving element Water, receptor of all things deep and mysterious. In Celtic lore, the cauldron of Cerridwen was also known as the Cauldron of Inspiration and contained all knowledge, wisdom and healing. This cauldron was also a tool of transformation wherein the dead could reside for a time before being reborn anew.

PRACTICAL MAGICK - Magickal Remnants
by Karen Charboneau-Harrison

Sometimes after a ritual you probably have bits and pieces of parchment, candle wax or small pieces of ribbon or cloth left over. What should you do with them? Should you just throw them away or is there something special you should be doing with your left-overs?

Remember that all of the materials that you use in your workings are infused with the energy of what you just did in your ritual. It would be disrespectful and a dissipation of energy to dispose of them in your trash as if they were nothing.

HAPPY LUGHNASSADH
by Karen Charboneau-Harrison

The name LAMMAS comes from the Anglo-Saxon Hlaf-maesse meaning ‘bread-mass’. Another name for this Sabbat is Lughanssadh, meaning the Feast or Games of Lugh. Lammas is the time of the first harvest of the grain, a time of thanksgiving for the first harvesting of the fruits of summer. Traditional at this time is the celebration and sharing of the products of the first grains: bread and ale. In ancient Celtic, Gaelic and Pagan tradition, the grains of the Earth are seen as the body of the God, sacrificed at the Harvest, baked into bread and then consumed to keep the tides of life flowing. Many times the first loaf will be made into the shape of a man to represent the God or long loaves to symbolize his regenerative powers. The first summer fairs begin, often continuing through the Autumn Equinox, as the months of August and September together comprise the time of thanksgiving and rejoicing in the abundance of grain, fruits, produce and the health of our herds - all of which will provide food to see us through the barren winter.

The Sun now is in the sign of backyard barbeques and pool parties which puts focus to matters of tribe and sustenance. Cancer is the Pooh bear of zodiacal signs underneath a sometimes distant exterior. They have a talent for making themselves and everyone else feel ‘at home’. Their unassuming manner and 'down to earth' wisdom make them a popular friend. Whether we feel understood, loved, and valued for who we are, rather than for what we do, is of greater significance now.

Independence Day brings Mercury retrograde at 1:34 in the afternoon, in the 2nd degree of Leo. In Retrograde Planets: Traversing the Inner Landscape, Erin Sullivan provides a downright poetic description of the (approximate) three weeks of Mercury's retrograde: "The retrograde cycle is part of the archetypal journey from a known place, or from a set of values, which are suddenly thrown into question. Then follows the transition from that place of certainty down into the place of the unknown... It is in this liminal place the wisdom of the unconscious is allowed to loosen and float to the surface, giving instruction from that most intelligent source, the intuition." The dread one feels due to Mercury's retrograde is directly proportional to the dread experienced at exploring one's inner world and relinquishing "that place of certainty".
