FENG SHUI

Feng Shui means "the way of wind and water". It is the ancient Chinese tradition of using the natural forces of the elements plus geomancy to create harmonious flowing energy. By using Feng Shui, you can alter the energy flows in your home or workplace to increase prosperity, happiness & health.

The pattern used is called the BaQua - the 8 trigrams of the I Ching which are superimposed on locations to create the 8 Stations of Life which relate to: Prosperity, Relationships, Helpful People, New Knowledge, Family/Health, Children, Fame and Career. The pattern of the BaQua is as follows: In the Black Hat School, the branch of Feng Shui used most commonly in the United States, it is the front entrance of a place that determines the placement of the BaQua and is called "North" (although it may not truly be oriented in the North). North is Career, its colors are black and dark tones, its shapes are asseymetrical and its element is Water.

To the right of the Career section, is the New Knowledge area of your home or workplace - it is a place of spirituality & calm and its colors are black, blues and greens.

Immediately below New Knowledge is Health and Family, its direction is East, Blues and greens are its colors, its shapes are columns and its element is Wood.

Below Health/Family is the area of Wealth and Prosperity with its colors of blues, purples and reds. It is also the station or area of respect and authority.

To the immediate left of Wealth is the area of Fame. Red is its color, triangles are its shapes, its direction is south and its element is Fire. This is the station to activate for strength and happiness.

To the immediate left of Fame is the Love and Marriage area with its colors of red, pink and white.

Above Love and Marriage is the station of Children. Its colors are white and pastels, its shapes are circles or ovals, its direction is West and its element is Metal.

Immediately above the Children area is the Helpful People/Travel station. Its colors are white, greys and black.

To activate or strengthen any of these areas or stations in your home or workplace, enhance the rooms which are in a specific area you want to emphasize with its colors, shapes and/or element.

The Chinese Elements are similar to how we view them in the West, but subtly different: Wood is fertile, abundance, growth and strength; Fire is activating, expressive and clearing; Earth is grounding, stabilizing and longterm, Metal is manifesting and intensifying, Water can be still or moving, when it is still insight and wisdom are activated; when water is moving, social contacts, changes and opportunities are created.

Place objects, shapes & colors as appropriate in correct Station of the BaQua to enhance the energies there - to activate a particular Station, write down your specific desire, meditate on it, place your writing in a red envelope & place it in that Station. Increase energy in a Station by putting natural elemental forces in that area, for example plants, crystals, copper pennies, candles, mobiles, chimes, music, mirrors, pictures, fountains, aquariums can all be used to enhance energies.

You want energy to flow in a circular fashion or in a drawing fashion in your home or office. Sha or 'hard, holding or depleting' places need to be altered to create this. Walkways, hallways and entries can produce sha places where energy is stagnant or flows away from you. Shapes like a crescent moon or sun as well as windchimes can produce Chi or moving energy.

Large, undefined rooms can create chaotic energy - to create shapes and corners place rocks, lamps, candles or plants in the location of missing corners and then place mirrors or crystals there which reflect the opposite corner. Corners that cut into the flow (furniture, cabinets, columns) cut the energy field. In these areas you'll need to rearrange your furniture or put red dots on furniture corners to hold energy and keep it from protruding.

Objects which are electrical such as your microwave, tv, computer or phones can disperse chaotic energy as well and need red dots on them to hold the energy field. Blowing fans disrupt energy & create chaos so don't put in a BaQua station or above your bed. You want to enter rooms as well as your home to the left, moving clockwise to keep Chi flowing.

If you can see door or window directly ahead upon entering room that's where energy is flowing out. Place a mirror face side in at that door or window and another reflective piece or a plant where you enter the room to reflect back into the window or door mirror, creating a flow. Keep the toilet lid down & put it down before flushing and sink drains closed to keep energy from being sucked away. If you're using plants for chi they should have soft , round shapes, not sharp like yucca plants. They must be healthy & lush. If you have a brown thumb you'll be glad to know that the plants can be silk.

Physical objects store energy and enhance Chi. You can use crystals, rocks, pine cones, shells, or pot pourri, for example. All should have personal meaning for you.. Fountains & aquariums tend to be especially good in the Career Station because flowing water = flow of money. Mobiles, flags and weathervanes uplift & invigorate Chi. Placed outside they draw energy to your house or business. Any art should you use should relate to the specific Station - whimsical art in the Children station; romantic in the Marriage station; powerful art in the Career, Fame station; and inspirational art in the New Knowledge, Helpful People station.

Lighting is important as well. Bright is good. Not fluorescent light however - use full spectrum light like halogen tubes. You can also use lit candles in colors appropriate to the Station.

If you have a fireplace in a room keep in mind that if it is really large can be it can be too fiery and thus burn up Chi. Place a symbol of water - bowl of water, indoor fountain, mirror, crystal ornament, glass doors on fireplace to balance the Fire energy there.

Crystal prisms are used extensively in Feng Shui. You'll want to use round, faceted prisms to disperse too much Chi in an area or to activate sluggish Chi. You may find that a beautiful suncatcher will serve your purpose well.

Chimes, bells and flutes call in good Chi, new opportunities and harmony. You can also use music to directly change energy in room. There are now available cassettes and cd's of specific Feng Shui music that you can play. It doesn't need to be played constantly, just when you are working with the energy or notice that it needs balancing.

Mirrors activate, enhance and circulate Chi. Feng Shui mirrors should be large you should be able to see yourself in the mirror without cutting off your head. Mirros are very good in the entry way to a home or business and can reflect negativity out of the building. You can also use smaller mirrors to set objects upon in a BaQua Station to enhance, hold & reflect the energy that you're setting into motion there. Don't place mirrors at the end of a long hallway (it will create an energy sink), only along the walls of the hall to expand Chi. Don't place mirrors opposite you bed or you'll have sleepless nights, or reflecting each other creating chaotic energy.

If you want to bring a specific element into a BaQua Station here are some suggestions:

Wood - column shapes, wood furniture, paneling, siding, roofing, floor. Plants, cotton, floral print, landscape pictures, green and blue, balances Earth, enhances Fire

Fire - triangles, lighting, animal products (leather etc), pets, art of people & animals, sunshine, fire, reds, balances Metal, enhances Earth

Earth - squares, rectangles, adobe, brick, ceramic, art of deserts, fields, yellow/earthtones, balances Water, enhances Metal

Metal - circles, ovals, arches rocks, stones, natural crystals, art & sculpture of metal or stone, white, pastels, balances Wood, enhances Water

Water - flowing assymetrical shapes, streams, fountains, reflective surfaces, black/dark tones, balances Fire, enhances Wood

Feng Shui principles can be as simple or as complex as you like. Try it! I think you'll be happy with your results and find your life and goals definitely enhanced.
