The Pentacle
 by Karen Charboneau-Harrison

One of the 4 traditional magickal tools, the Pentacle is a round, flat circle with a Pentagram inscribed with a single unbroken line on its surface.  Each point represents one of the Elements – the very top point represents Spirit, the top left represents Air, the top right represents Water, the bottom right represents Fire and the bottom left represents Earth.  Together, they symbolize the 4 elements of the physical world being led or influenced by Spirit.

Amulets and symbols of Egypt
 by Karen Charboneau-Harrison

The ancient Egyptians used amulets and talismans extensively in their magickal work.  The word amulet and talisman are often used interchangeably.  Famed Egyptologist E A Wallis Budge says that the word ‘amulet’ is derived from an Arabic word meaning ‘to bear, to carry’.  An amulet or talisman is something filled with magickal energy which is worn or carried on the body to bring specific desires or events to the individual who carries, wears or bears it.  In Egypt, they were often carved from gemstones: carnelian, lapis lazuli, turquoise, feldspar and serpentine being used most often.  Gold, copper, bronze and iron were also used to fashion the amulet or talisman.  Faience was the most popular of all, however.   Faience is a clay paste mixed with sand, formed into a shape and then fired.  The sand base in the clay is what gives the faience its dreamy blue color. These are the most common symbols used in Egyptian Talismanic magick:

The SCARAB (dung beetle) is the symbol of rebirth and protection of one's life force.  Carved in carnelian it symbolizes life force.  Carved in lapis lazuli it symbolizes one’s connection with the Divine and one’s rebirth onto another plane of existence.

The ANKH (oval at the top, horizontal line and handle underneath) symbolizes the life force and rebirth.

Goddess Spirituality for the 21st Century
 by Karen Charboneau-Harrison

Over the last 50 years we have seen a re-emergence of interest and dedication to the Goddess whether in the form of Wicca, the re-emphasis on Mary in the Catholic religion or in the eclectic blending of tradition and liturgy spontaneously created by people who are expressing their own personal connections to the Feminine Divine. What do these spiritual expressions share that is commonly known as Goddess Spirituality?

First and foremost is a reverence for the feminine in the Divine, the recognition that the Goddess is the ultimate creative power of the Universe. Goddess religion is not necessarily exclusive to only the feminine expression of the divine, however.   Many individuals and groups also feel that balance is better achieved by creating a system which acknowledges and honors both Masculine and Feminine divine energies.

April arrives on a Saturday with the Sun in pioneering and adventurous Aries. As the beginning sign of the astrological wheel, Aries has an inherent need to be first. Planets placed in this sign often have a driving force of their own to be recognized and honored. For this reason planets or midpoints falling at 0 degrees of Aries (or any of the Cardinal signs for that matter) are considered to strive for recognition.

There is restlessness to these early weeks of the month. Sunday April 2nd brings us Daylight Savings time; remember to turn your clocks forward. Monday April 3rd has Mercury up to speed in direct motion and trining fortuitous Jupiter on Tuesday allowing for an expansion of perspective, travels, contractual matters and networking. On Wednesday Venus planet of love and finances moves into imaginative Pisces, while Saturn the planet of consequences turns to travel in direct motion in Leo. Matters of pride and responsibility will take on new realities in the months and weeks ahead. Saturday finds energetic Mars in opposition to powerful Pluto, instigating a desire to exert oneself physically or psychologically. On Palm Sunday, the Sun’s easy aspect to Neptune favors spiritual and altruistic endeavors.

Find out what this means for you in April....
