YULE, THE WINTER SOLSTICE & THE WILD HUNT

In the north when biting winter winds blow and bare branches rattle like bones, it was thought wise to remain inside at night, especially during the twelve days of Yule. During this gloomy time when the Sun appears to stand still, it was believed that to keep the yule log burning would persuade the Sun to move again and make the days grow longer. The first day of Yule always occurs on the Winter Solstice, which is December 21st at 11 PM MST this year and is the beginning of our coldest season. To many European tribes these first twelve days of winter were when the spectral 'Wild Hunt' was most likely to race across the night sky. Ancient customs mark this as the time of the opening of the Underworld's gates, when measures of protection were required for everyone, but especially for the young and the sick. We are all familiar with 'Christmas' ghost stories - from Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol to Tim Burton's "The Nightmare before Christmas." I have often been asked, though, why there should be ghosts and hauntings at this time of the year when many people want to be focused on family, the return home (either actual or in their imaginations) and deeper quests for personal and spiritual renewal. "Isn't Samhain (31 October) the night of haunting?" One answer - at least from the perspective of Celtic mysticism & mythology - is simple, and has to do with the nature of the Winter Solstice. This festival - called Alban Arthuan in Druidic traditions - has long been thought of as a time of death & rebirth when Nature's innate powers and our own souls are renewed. This event - which marks the moment in the spiral of earthen time when the Old Sun dies and when the Sun of the New Year is born - frames the longest night of the year. Insomnia is a problem that affects just about everybody at one time or another in their lives. Although hard statistics are difficult to come by, researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimate that as many as 30% of adult Americans suffer from sleeplessness on a nightly basis, and 10% of those cases are severe enough to impair daytime functioning. Defined by the NIH as, "complaints of disturbed sleep in the presence of adequate opportunity and circumstance for sleep," insomnia can be caused by many factors, including but not limited to sleep apnea, jet lag, depression, anxiety, or acid reflux disease. If your insomnia goes on for more than a week, please see your health-care provider, as prolonged insomnia can be a sign (or cause!) of a deeper health issue.
