ALTAR REQUIREMENTS
by Karen Charboneau-Harrison

Many people live in small apartments or have roommates. Maybe you don't have an extra room in your house to devote to a home temple. How can you set up a magickal area when you don't have a lot of extra space where you live? What is required on your altar? It doesn't have to be a problem. You don't really have to have a lot of extra space for your altar or magickal working space. You can create a small altar in your bedroom for a specific ritual that you then dismantle when you're finished.

THE BOOK OF SHADOWS
by Karen Charboneau-Harrison

Historically speaking, the Book of Shadows (BoS) is a fairly recent innovation in Wicca. It is a written record of the seasonal rituals, moon celebrations, rites of passage and esoteric knowledge of a Witch or coven. Wiccan knowledge and lore has been primarily oral until the last half of the twentieth century. The vast majority of our Pagan ancestors were illiterate and would have been unable to keep written records, sharing their wisdom, our history and lore instead by mouth in teaching, story and song. This is not to say that Wicca as a whole is simply a twentieth century invention - we do have roots, lore and practices reaching back into the shadows of history - we just haven't written it down until recently!

THE SABBAT OF MABON
by Karen Charboneau-Harrison

Also known as Harvest Home, this Sabbat is named for Mabon , the Divine Youth of antiquity who was hidden yet ever remains as the Sun. His name literally means 'son'. Mabon (Harvest Home, Autumn Equinox) is a celebration of Thanksgiving for the blessings and abundance of the year, for the food, clothing and shelter which sustains us now and will continue to sustain us through the quiet, dark months of Winter. We celebrate the manifestation of the fruits of our labors and look forward to rest and repose after the harvesting. It is the time of the last preparations before the coming of darkness in Winter. As such, it is also the time to prepare the spirit for an interval of introspection and inner growth.

MAGICKAL ASTROLOGY FOR SEPTEMBER

September opens with the Sun and Mercury conjunct in gentle Virgo. The mind is now focused on manifestation. On Monday the 4th Pluto returns to direct motion allowing those with planets at 24 degrees of the mutable signs (Gemini Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) to finally release and begin the process of moving forward. September 7th brings us the Full Moon eclipse at 12:52 pm. Uranus' close link to the Moon will shake up what would normally be pragmatic lunar eclipse energy. As at the prior Full Moon, altruistic endeavors are favored. A Lunar eclipse can only occur at the time of the Full Moon when the Earth comes between the Sun and Moon casting a shadow on the Moon. Eclipses present themselves two weeks apart and will take place in the same signs usually for a succession of years. This Lunar eclipse will be followed in two weeks by a solar eclipse and begins the Virgo / Pisces series.

Mercury makes two aspects on September 3rd, setting the stage for Pluto to go direct on the 4th. First, Mercury forms an opposition with Uranus at 3:21 a.m., followed by a sextile to Jupiter at 4:05 p.m. Although Mercury's rapid speed makes these two aspects rather brief in duration, they do nevertheless set a mental tone for Pluto. The opposition to Uranus represents mental restiveness, very likely setting your mind racing in new directions. Breakthroughs in attitudes and perceptions are its hallmark. The one major drawback is the likelihood that something significant will get overlooked, and you may speak before you notice seemingly small details. The subsequent sextile to Jupiter symbolizes the potential to incorporate attitudinal breakthroughs into a comprehensive understanding, a fresh context to accommodate emerging innovative views.
