RAISING THE PAGAN CHILD
by Karen Charboneau-Harrison

Bringing a new life onto this planet is a long-term commitment and the challenges inherent in that commitment are multiplied a thousand-fold when the child is raised as a Pagan. Most of us live in the Judeo-Christian American culture. Its values and judgments are present in everything we experience, sometimes openly and sometimes covertly.

The larger community assumes that everyone sees the world in a black/white, either/or way while ignoring diversity and options that can be explored and employed in living a fuller life. It assumes, too, that we have only one life to live, not many lives within which to learn our lessons and that the rules promoted by dominant religions are 'natural laws' rather than man-made ones. It assumes that all of our information comes through only the five physical senses and that 'magic' is merely Hollywood's special effects. It assumes that we are all victims of 'original sin' and without personal responsibility and power in the direction of our lives. It also assumes that children have no power in their own right and, ultimately, that anything different than all these assumptions is suspect, threatening, frightening or merely foolish.

LAYING THE MYSTIC FOUNDATION
by Christopher Penczak

We live in a time and place of both a great blessing and a great curse. Never before in the history of humanity has everyone had access to all the world's mysteries and wisdom. The great blessing is this - the religions, myths, rituals and spiritual techniques of almost all traditions are available to us. We can go to the library, to a bookstore or online to search and find a little bit of information on any mystic tradition. It's quite amazing, and nothing in the ancient world can compare to it. Though information and teachings were traded among mystics in the ancient world, such as the information passing from the Egyptians to the Greeks, it was not so readily available to the average person in society.

CONCERNING THE DEAD
by Nancy Batty

"That is not dead which can eternal lie,
And with strange aeons even death may die.
"

These lines from the short story "The Nameless City," published in Weird Tales in 1921, are the first hint the world was given of the unspeakable tome known as Necronomicon. Attributed to the mad poet, Abdul Alhazred, the couplet describes the erstwhile denizens of a forbidden metropolis, reptilian beasts from another dimension, enemies of humanity and covetous of our home. Unnamed in either this story or the second short story in which it's mentioned (1922's "The Hound," also published in Weird Tales.), the book was only known as a collection of blasphemous wisdom and arcane, sickening drawings, bound in tanned human skin. Over the course of a dozen or so short stories and novellas penned by science fiction/horror author Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1891-1937), the book, called Necronomicon, is revealed to be a grimoire (a written collection of magickal rituals), and one of a most unwholesome variety. Not only were the spells, rites, incantations, and anecdotes within its noisome covers created for the purpose of consorting with humanity's greatest alien enemies, but those writings themselves are of such foulness that the very study of them drives their readers incurably mad.

THE SABBAT OF SAMHAIN
by Karen Charboneau-Harrison

Samhain (Hallowe'en, Hallomas, Sauin, Samhuinn, Nos Galan Gaoef, Nos Kentan'r Bloaz) is the traditional Celtic New Year's Eve. It is the beginning of the dark period of the year which will gradually give birth to a new sun and new life. It is the beginning of the gestation period for the coming year and of the future. As such, the Horned God must leave the seed of life with the Great Mother for the New Year. This is the last opportunity He will have to perform this greatest of all magicks before He must depart the physical world and so sojourn in the land of spirits and waiting souls. His departure at Samhain is very dramatic and powerful as it opens the gates of the entire netherworld for a brief period thus rendering Samhain a period of awe for all who have the senses to feel it.

In the early weeks of October the Sun moves through the engaging sign of Libra. This is the sign of collaborative endeavors and relatedness. As an air Libra is addicted to "knowing." And because we can't really know everything about anything, Libra will vacillate. Yet Libra is also the sign that builds bridges; between people, concepts, objectives, or whatever else has captured its interest. If you are new to the neighborhood find a Libra to show you around, as Venus the planet of beauty, prosperity and affable relations rules this sign. On October 1st Mercury the planet of communications moves into investigative Scorpio lending an element of depth and one pointed focus to communications this month. The planet of imagination and inspiration, Neptune, will be favorably aspected by many of the personal planets through October's first two weeks: Mars on 10/4, the Sun on 10/10, Venus on 10/13 and Mercury on 10/15, as well as the Moon's weekly aspects. Neptune lends an element of enchantment/magic, or longing/discontent, to whatever it touches. When we find our life devoid of magic we realize a longing for 'something more,' even if we don't know what that something is. Neptune can inspire or confuse depending on ones capacity to feel reverence. In these weeks make time for whatever connects you to Beauty, as both Libra and Neptune operate optimally when they experience a daily dose of natural splendor.

Mercury transits into Scorpio in the evening of October 1st, the sign in which Mercury will turn retrograde later in the month. This means that Mercury spends significant time in Scorpio - till 12/7, making it a prime time to ponder concerns and issues that require great concentration. Mental acuity is greatly heightened through Scorpio's influence, and communication takes on profound implications. Mental dilettantism must be shelved for the next two months. Instincts are sharpened and become a valuable source of input, and the general meaning of "communication" will be significantly expanded. Mercury in Scorpio misses absolutely nothing, or if it does, pays a price for inattention. What price? That depends on the nature and magnitude of the factor that's missed. So it's best not to get sloppy or lazy or presumptuous regarding attitudes, communication, and/or knowledge. In The Moment of Astrology, Geoffrey Cornelius notes that "Mercury is directly concerned with the step that crosses from light to dark, dark to light and makes conscious in interpretation." The "dark" doesn't get any darker than Scorpio, particularly when the retrograde period begins on the 28th. But more about that later...
