HALLOWEEN AND PAGAN CHILDREN
by Karen Charboneau-Harrison

Halloween can sometimes be problematic for Pagans with children. For us, it is one of our most sacred and important holidays, yet we are surrounded by green-faced, cardboard 'witches' hanging over candy displays, plus offensive greeting cards. Story hour at school often involves a scary tale with a 'witch' as a villain and our children receive coloring handouts at school that depict at least one flying, warty 'witch'. It is inappropriate to expect your child to challenge these misrepresentations at school or for you to arrive fuming to confront the teacher or principal. Tempting though it may be to forego public confrontations, the proper response is to deal with these inconsistencies in the privacy of your own home. Tell your children that these images are produced by people who do not really know anything about real Witches and that no hurt or insult is intended. You can also explain how current North American Halloween customs developed in order to show them how other people do celebrate an important holiday with us.

DANCING IN THE LIGHT
The Power of the White Goddess to Revolutionize the Darkness
by Amber Zeta

As the weather cools down and the leaves begin their annual dress change, we are approaching the dark. And yet, even now, there is a balance of the forces, light and dark.

There is a voice telling us there will be light again, that the seasons will continue their dance. As the dark of the year descends upon us, many folks will become victim to seasonal sadness due to the waning of the light. When you are able to fully appreciate the season, with its cold and biting tongue, with its shadows, you also can be thankful for the light in your life.

NECRONOMICON TAROT KIT - A REVIEW
by Nancy Batty

In 1921, renowned horror and science-fiction author H.P. Lovecraft created a literary and occult monster when he published his short story "The Nameless City." In this story, an explorer describes a mysterious underground city he once found that had apparently in antediluvian times been populated by a race of intelligent reptilian creatures. He notes that the city is the one dreamed of and sung into poem by the mad Arab, Abdul Al-Hazred, and he quotes a couplet from that poem. That same poem is quoted in a later story, "The Hound," and is revealed to be part of a book - the dread tome called Necronomicon. With these two stories, and over the course of many more, Lovecraft began to develop a pseudomythology of mad gods and obscene magicks that has captured the imagination of readers, writers, and mystics for decades. In these stories, Earth's hapless inhabitants are constantly in danger of being overrun and annihilated by evil extraterrestrial gods, and some humans are power-mad (or just plain mad) enough to want to help these gods come in and take over. Possessed of a morbid imagination and a brilliant creativity, Lovecraft was able to create stories of creeping paranoia to chill the blood - weird tales of monsters, warlocks, desert nightmares, and unpleasant deaths. These tales sparked ideas in other writers, who in turn took up Lovecraft's themes, characters, and images, to make frightening and entertaining stories of their own.

A central, integral image of these short stories and novellas was the book Necronomicon.

ALHAZRED'S NECRONOMICON
Necronomicon  by Donald Tyson

The Necronomicon has become a kind of egregore in the modern world. It is the most notorious grimoire of all time, a notable achievement for a book that never existed. There is no historical evidence that such a book was written, yet tens of thousands of people believe it is real and claim to have seen copies in various libraries in Europe and America, or assert that they know someone who owns a true copy. The very weight of persistent belief in the book has lent it a kind of shadow life that makes the question of its reality difficult to answer with a simple yes or no.

It began simply as a plot device in the short stories of the New England writer of weird tales, Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937).

FIND THE DRAGON IN YOU
Mother Dragon Statue  by Stephanie S. Sommers

Dragons have existed in the human psyche as long as there has been such a thing as human psyche. The most ancient human cultures had stories about Dragons, all the way back to ancient India, Africa, The Far East and even the early people of the Americas. Scientists theorize that the reason that Dragons make an appearance on all the major continents is that the Dragon is a composite of predators that ancient people feared. Theory says that the Dragon is made up of components of the leopard, eagle and snake, any one of which could spell trouble for a human caught unaware. Stories were created as warning to avoid the danger of these creatures, and eventually the Dragon emerged from the stories as a single beast all its own.

THE SABBAT OF SAMHAIN/HALLOWEEN (October 31)
by Karen Charboneau-Harrison

Samhain (Hallowe'en, Hallomas, Sauin, Samhuinn, Nos Galan Gaoef, Nos Kentan'r Bloaz) is the traditional Celtic New Year's Eve. It is the beginning of the dark period of the year which will gradually give birth to a new sun and new life. It is the beginning of the gestation period for the coming year and of the future. As such, the Horned God must leave the seed of life with the Great Mother for the New Year. This is the last opportunity He will have to perform this greatest of all magicks before He must depart the physical world and so sojourn in the land of spirits and waiting souls. His departure at Samhain is very dramatic and powerful as it opens the gates of the entire netherworld for a brief period thus rendering Samhain a period of awe for all who have the senses to feel it.

KNIGHTS TEMPLAR
by Fran Carey

March 18, 1314, Isle du Palais, Paris, France. Stripped of their robes of office, the two men were chained to stakes, the executioners surrounding them with carefully selected cured wood and charcoal, so that the fire would be slow-burning and hot, and the relapsed heretics would be roasted slowly and agonizingly. The next day, fueled by rumors of the dying monk's final challenge, that the king and the pope who had so betrayed him meet him within the year before the Throne of God, the people of Paris braved the waters of the Seine to retrieve holy relics, cinders from the excommunicated soldiers, Jacques de Molay, last Grand Master of the Pauperes Commilitones Christi Templique Salomonis, the Poor Fellow Soldiers of Christ and the Temple of Solomon, the Knights Templar, and Geoffrey de Charnay, Preceptor of Normandy.
Ed note: October 13, 2007 marks the 700th anniversary of the mass arrest of the Knights of the Temple in France.
